2 TB Hard Drives: Seagate Intros and Western Digital Ships!

Posted by Laura on February 3, 2009

Seagate Technologies & Western Digital are both introducing 2GB hard drives & new features low power consumption.

On Monday Seagate unveiled its Constellation family of enterprise hard drives that feature a 2.5″ and 3.5″ drive with capacities up to 2TB.

The company follows by only a couple of days the shipment of the latest in Western Digital WD Caviar Green Hard Drive family featuring the 2TB capacity.

Seagate’s Constellation family includes the line of tier-two enterprise nearline storage drives previously called Barracuda ES.  This segment of the company’s product line was renamed Constellation to reduce confusion with the companys’ Barracuda 7200 desktop drive line.

The drive is expected to ship next quarter & features either 1TB or 2TB of capacity in either SATA or SAS interfaces.  The SAS drive are also suppose to be available with a native data encryption option for security.

Seagate’s new Constellation drives currently offer the lowest power consumption in the industry.  The SATA versions consume 2.4 watts of power in idle mode while the SAS versions consume 2.8 watts while idle.

Western Digital beat Seagate to the market last week by releasing 2TB WD Caviar Green hard drive. The WD Caviar Green family is a series of 3.5″ drives with 32MB of cache available in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB capabilities.

Unlike, Seagate’s new Enterprise Constellation drives, the WD Caviar Green family targets desktop PC’s, workstations, desktop RAID systems & USB Firewire or eSATA external hard drives, per Western Digital.

RedLegg’s pricer of the Western Digital is $265.   Price of the Seagate has not yet been released.. but stay tuned Tammy!!!
