Controllers that work with 2TB SATA Drives

Posted by Laura on March 25, 2009

When I say work.. I mean “recognize” all of the data..  It is by far the most common question asked in the past few weeks.    Since these drives are so new and so quick to be released the controller cards are still in the testing phases to make sure they will recognize all of the data.   Creating a Storage Array with this 2TB drives sounds like an ideal cost savings solution, but the RAID card must be able to recognize all of the data.    So my conclusion.. Promise does not “recommend” using their controller cards for anything over 1.5TB (actually then said 1TB but I know from personal experience with my array their controllers WILL recognize 1.5TB.. maybe they just do not want to say it so they don’t have to support it.  And they said to check back in June-July to see if they have new documentation out, new product released etc.    The recommended controllers are either of the following 3ware 9650SE, 9590SE or the 9550X.  Although still SLOW.. it will recognize the data that will be complete for an inexpensive data storage need.  If there are any other controllers that I come across that also do the trick, I will update them in here ASAP.
